The Brian Jonestown Massacre se formó en San Francisco, California, en 1990. Han sido esenciales en el desarrollo de la moderna escena de garaje estadounidense, y muchos músicos de Los Ángeles y San Francisco empezaron a tocar con Anton Newcombe. Su influencia sigue llegando muy lejos y se puede escuchar en la actual cosecha de bandas de psyche en la escena británica como The Horrors y Toy.
